Astragaloside IV is a cycloartane-type triterpenoid saponin and one of the principal bioactive constituents of Astragalus membranaceus (Astragali Radix, or huang qi), a root long used in traditional Chinese medicine. It is commonly used as a chemical marker for the quality control of astragalus preparations. In laboratory and animal research it has drawn interest for anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cardioprotective activity, though clinical evidence in humans remains limited.

Overview
Astragaloside IV is a saponin, a class of natural compound in which a sugar unit is attached to a steroid-like or triterpene core. Structurally it is a cycloartane-type triterpene glycoside, and it is regarded as the main active saponin isolated from the root of Astragalus membranaceus. [1] Because its content is relatively consistent, pharmacopoeias often use astragaloside IV as a marker compound to standardize astragalus herbal material. [1]
The parent plant, known in Chinese as huang qi, is a legume whose dried root has been used as a tonic in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. [1] Astragaloside IV is obtained by extracting and purifying this root, and it is studied both on its own and as part of whole-root preparations.
Most published research on astragaloside IV involves cell cultures and animal models rather than large human trials. It has been most studied for the cardiovascular system: a systematic review and meta-analysis of preclinical models reported that astragaloside IV reduced markers of myocardial injury and improved heart function in models of ischemic heart disease, effects linked to reduced cell death and inflammation. [2] A broader pharmacological review catalogues additional reported actions on blood vessels, the kidney, the lung, and liver fibrosis. [1]
The compound also shows anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating effects in the laboratory. In a mouse model of sepsis, for example, it lessened lung injury by expanding regulatory T-cells and lowering inflammatory signaling. [3] Reviews of Astragalus constituents further highlight astragaloside IV among the saponins with potential neuroprotective activity in models of neurological disease. [4]
Astragaloside IV is sold as an isolated dietary-supplement ingredient and as a standardized component of astragalus extracts, and it also appears in cosmetic products. It is not an approved drug, and because the human data are preliminary, its benefits in people are not established.
Mechanism
Astragaloside IV is the principal saponin of Astragalus membranaceus and acts on several intracellular signaling systems rather than a single receptor. [1] A recurring theme across studies is suppression of and inflammation: it lowers the production of reactive oxygen species and dampens pro-inflammatory mediators such as TNF-alpha and various interleukins. [2] In cardiac tissue it reduces programmed cell death by shifting the balance of apoptosis regulators, lowering pro-apoptotic proteins such as Bax and caspase-3 while raising the protective protein Bcl-2, and it supports blood-vessel growth through increased VEGF. [2] In immune models it can promote regulatory T-cell responses that restrain excessive inflammation. [3] These overlapping antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic actions are thought to underlie its reported protective effects, though they have mostly been demonstrated in cells and animals. Safetyrisks and cautions, not medical advice
In studies it has a clean tolerability profile, but purified human dosing data is essentially absent. Because it can stimulate immune activity, people on immunosuppressants or with autoimmune conditions should be cautious. Poor oral absorption means marketed doses may not deliver much.
Subjective profileweighing the evidence above
Interesting longevity molecule with weak oral absorption; promising in the lab, not proven to extend anything in humans.

FAQ
Is this the same as TA-65?
TA-65 is a related, astragalus-derived telomerase-activator product. AS-IV is a specific saponin from the same plant with a similar reputation.
Why is bioavailability an issue?
It absorbs poorly through the gut, so a lot of an oral dose may never reach the bloodstream at meaningful levels.
Will it make me live longer?
No proof of that in people. The telomerase effect is real in cells but hasn't translated to demonstrated lifespan benefits in humans.
Whole astragalus or isolated AS-IV?
For most people whole-herb astragalus is cheaper and gives a broader mix of actives; isolated AS-IV is mainly for the telomerase angle.
Limitations of the evidence
- Human safety data are limited
Adverse effects
- Could in theory interact with immune-modulating or blood-sugar medications
Notes and cautions
- Generally well tolerated in short studies
- Most evidence comes from cell and animal work
- Purity varies between isolated products
