Mechanism
Interferon alfa-2b binds the type I interferon receptor and switches on an antiviral transcription programme in the surrounding epithelium, while diphenhydramine blocks H1 receptors to reduce conjunctival itching and oedema. Topical ophthalmic interferon has almost no evidence base outside Russian practice, and the combination as a combination has not been evaluated independently.
