Mechanism
Interferon alfa-2b applied to nasal mucosa engages the type I interferon receptor locally and switches on interferon stimulated genes in respiratory epithelium, which is a real and well characterised pathway. What is not established is whether the low doses used here reach a concentration that changes the course of an infection.
