Epicatechin is a flavanol, a type of plant polyphenol found in cocoa, tea, apples, and grapes. Its naturally predominant (-)-epicatechin form is thought to be the main compound behind the beneficial effects of flavanol-rich cocoa on blood vessels. Overview
Epicatechin is a flavan-3-ol, a member of the flavonoid group of plant polyphenols and a stereoisomer of catechin. The naturally predominant form, (-)-epicatechin, occurs in cocoa and dark chocolate, green and other teas, apples, grapes, and berries, often alongside related catechins. Unlike its gallate ester epigallocatechin gallate, epicatechin carries no attached gallic acid group.
Epicatechin has drawn interest as the constituent most responsible for the cardiovascular effects attributed to cocoa flavanols. In a controlled human study, pure (-)-epicatechin reproduced the improvements in blood-vessel function seen after people drank flavanol-rich cocoa, including better flow-mediated widening of arteries and changes tied to nitric oxide, which indicated that epicatechin itself mediates these responses [1]. Reviews of dietary flavonoids likewise single out (-)-epicatechin as a driver of improved endothelial function and modest blood-pressure lowering through the nitric oxide pathway [2].
In animal models, epicatechin has shown further cardiovascular and metabolic effects; for instance, in hypertensive rats it lowered blood pressure, reduced oxidative stress, and helped preserve the heart's structure and function [3]. Laboratory work has also explored effects on mitochondria and skeletal muscle, though much of this evidence is preliminary and human data remain more limited.
Epicatechin is consumed as a natural component of foods and is also sold as a dietary supplement, sometimes marketed for exercise performance or cardiovascular health. It is not an approved drug, and the amounts present in foods vary widely; cocoa processing in particular can substantially lower flavanol content.
Mechanism
Epicatechin's best-characterized action is on the vascular endothelium, the cell layer that lines blood vessels. It promotes the production and availability of , a signaling molecule that relaxes the smooth muscle in vessel walls and widens the vessels; in people, (-)-epicatechin increased nitric-oxide-dependent widening of arteries in step with the effects of flavanol-rich cocoa [1].
At the cellular level it is reported to activate endothelial synthase, the enzyme that makes nitric oxide, and to protect nitric oxide from breakdown by inhibiting oxidant-generating enzymes such as NADPH oxidase, thereby lowering [2][3]. Through these actions epicatechin can improve endothelial function, modestly reduce blood pressure, and, in animal studies, blunt inflammation and protect heart tissue [3]. Its antioxidant chemistry, shared with other polyphenols, further contributes by neutralizing reactive oxygen species.
