Very safe; excess is excreted in urine. High doses can cause GI upset and diarrhea and may raise the risk of kidney stones in susceptible people. Because it contains sodium, large doses add meaningful sodium, which matters for those on sodium-restricted diets or with heart or kidney issues.

Ascorbate reduces ferric iron to the ferrous form and keeps it soluble in the gut, which is why it markedly increases the absorption of non-heme iron. That is usually the point, but in hemochromatosis, thalassemia or transfusional iron overload the same chemistry frees redox active iron, and combined with deferoxamine it has been associated with cardiac deterioration.
At high doses ascorbate interferes with measurement more than with drugs. It is electroactive, so it produces falsely high readings on glucose oxidase meters and some continuous monitors and false negatives on fecal occult blood tests; cases of pseudohyperglycemia treated as ketoacidosis have been reported after intravenous vitamin C. Case reports describe warfarin resistance at large doses, though controlled studies have not confirmed it.
Where sodium ascorbate appears in a polyethylene glycol bowel preparation the interaction is mechanical: oral drugs taken close to the preparation may be flushed through before they are absorbed, and diuretics, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers and NSAIDs add to the fluid and electrolyte shifts the prep causes.

How is this different from regular vitamin C?
It's buffered with sodium so it's less acidic and easier on the stomach, but the vitamin C activity is the same.
Does the sodium matter?
At normal doses it's minor, but at gram-level doses the added sodium can add up for salt-sensitive people.
Is it better absorbed?
Absorption is comparable to ascorbic acid; the main advantage is gastric tolerance.
