Mechanism
Carnitine is the shuttle in the carnitine palmitoyltransferase system: CPT1 attaches it to long chain acyl groups at the outer membrane and CPT2 removes it inside, which is the only route those fats have into beta oxidation. It also buffers excess acyl-CoA by exporting it as acylcarnitine.
