8-Chlorotheophylline is a xanthine stimulant closely related to caffeine and theophylline. Its best-known role is as the mild stimulant half of Dramamine (dimenhydrinate), where it is paired with the sedating antihistamine diphenhydramine to offset its drowsiness. On its own it is a modest caffeine-like stimulant rather than a strong recreational drug.

Mechanism
Like caffeine and theophylline, 8-chlorotheophylline is a methylxanthine that works chiefly as an at receptors; blocking adenosine (a signal that builds up and promotes drowsiness) produces wakefulness and mild stimulation. At higher concentrations xanthines can also inhibit phosphodiesterase enzymes, raising intracellular messengers, but the everyday stimulant effect is mainly adenosine-receptor blockade. In dimenhydrinate it is combined with diphenhydramine specifically to counter that antihistamine's sedation.

As a caffeine-like stimulant it can cause jitteriness, insomnia, raised heart rate and, at high doses, palpitations and anxiety; the xanthine class has a narrower safety margin than caffeine when badly overdone. Because it is usually encountered inside dimenhydrinate, the bigger practical risk comes from the diphenhydramine partner, which is a deliriant and anticholinergic at high doses.
