Metizolam is a thienodiazepine (a benzodiazepine-type molecule where one benzene ring is swapped for a thiophene ring) sold as a research chemical. It's the desmethyl analog of etizolam, so it's presumed to work the same way; by boosting GABA it produces sedation, muscle relaxation, and anxiety relief. Mechanism
Metizolam is presumed to act as a positive modulator at the benzodiazepine site of the -A receptor. In plain terms, it doesn't open the chloride channel itself; it makes the receptor more responsive to GABA (the brain's main calming neurotransmitter), so each hit of GABA produces a bigger inhibitory signal. That widespread dampening of neural firing is what gives the sedation, reduced anxiety, muscle relaxation, and anticonvulsant effects shared across this class.
