Flunitrazolam is a designer benzodiazepine, a triazolo analog of flunitrazepam (Rohypnol) that is extremely potent, active in tiny amounts. It enhances GABA at the GABA-A receptor to produce heavy sedation and dense amnesia. Combining the potency of a triazolo ring with flunitrazepam's strong amnestic character makes it one of the more hazardous novel benzodiazepines.

Mechanism
Flunitrazolam is a positive modulator at the benzodiazepine site of the -A receptor; adding a triazole ring to the flunitrazepam structure sharply increases potency, so it enhances GABA-driven chloride flow and suppresses neural activity at very small quantities. The result is powerful sedation, muscle relaxation and marked anterograde amnesia, with a long duration.

Flunitrazolam is potent enough that overdosing is very easy and accurate measuring by eye is impossible. Combined with opioids or alcohol it stacks respiratory depression and can be fatal. It causes deep sedation and dense blackouts, and even brief use can produce dependence with a dangerous, seizure-risk withdrawal that must be tapered. Not medical advice.
