Flunitrazepam (brand name Rohypnol) is a potent prescription benzodiazepine used in some countries for severe insomnia and as a pre-anesthetic. It enhances GABA at the GABA-A receptor to produce strong sedation, muscle relaxation and marked amnesia. It is best known for its notoriety in drug-facilitated assault, a direct consequence of its strong sedative and memory-blocking effects.
- Strong sedation and sleep
- Anxiety relief
- Muscle relaxation
- Marked amnesia
- Next-day sedation and impairment
- Dependence and seizure-risk withdrawal
- Dangerous with alcohol or opioids
Mechanism
Flunitrazepam is a positive modulator at the benzodiazepine site of the -A receptor, increasing chloride-channel opening in response to GABA and deeply dampening neural activity. It is more potent than diazepam and produces especially strong sedation and anterograde amnesia (impaired formation of new memories), which is why it is effective for severe insomnia but also open to misuse.

Safetyrisks and cautions, not medical advice
Combined with opioids or alcohol, flunitrazepam stacks respiratory depression and can be fatal; alcohol also deepens its amnesia. Its strong sedative and memory-blocking effects are why it has been misused in drug-facilitated assault. Regular use causes tolerance and dependence, and abrupt withdrawal can cause seizures, so it must be tapered. Not medical advice.
Subjective profileweighing the evidence above
A potent prescription benzodiazepine with a genuinely grim history and no recreational case to make. It stacks dangerously with alcohol and opioids, its amnesia is why it was misused in assaults, and regular use ends in dependence with seizure-risk withdrawal that has to be tapered.

FAQ
What is flunitrazepam used for medically?
In countries where it is available, it is prescribed mainly for severe insomnia and sometimes as a pre-anesthetic sedative.
Why is it associated with assault?
It is a strong sedative that also blocks memory formation, which is why it has been misused to incapacitate people; this reflects its pharmacology, not a recommended use.
Is it stronger than Valium?
Yes. It is considerably more potent than diazepam, so it is active at much smaller amounts.
