Flualprazolam is a designer benzodiazepine, a fluorinated analog of alprazolam (Xanax) that is more potent than its parent. It is a triazolo benzodiazepine that enhances GABA to produce heavy sedation, anxiety relief and amnesia. It has appeared frequently in counterfeit pills and overdose reports, and its high potency makes it one of the more dangerous novel benzodiazepines.

Mechanism
Flualprazolam is a positive modulator at the benzodiazepine site of the -A receptor; like alprazolam it carries a triazole ring that gives it high potency, so it strongly enhances GABA-driven chloride flow and suppresses neural activity at small quantities. This yields marked sedation, anxiolysis and anterograde amnesia (impaired formation of new memories).

Flualprazolam is potent enough that overdosing is easy, and it has been widely implicated in deaths, especially in counterfeit tablets sold as Xanax and in mixtures with opioids. Combined with opioids or alcohol it stacks respiratory depression and can be fatal.
