Etizolam is a thienodiazepine, a close cousin of the benzodiazepines that acts the same way on GABA. Mechanism
Etizolam is a thienodiazepine that, like the benzodiazepines, positively modulates the -A receptor, amplifying the calming effect of GABA to produce anxiety relief, sedation, and muscle relaxation. Chemically it swaps a benzene ring for a thiophene ring, but functionally it behaves as a benzodiazepine and shares their tolerance, dependence, and interaction profile.
