Mechanism
The rationale is membrane repair: dietary polyenylphosphatidylcholine, whose dominant species is dilinoleoylphosphatidylcholine, incorporates into hepatocyte membranes and showed clear anti-fibrotic effects in baboon models of alcohol-induced liver injury. Human evidence is much weaker. Most trials are small, old and open-label, and a large controlled trial of polyenylphosphatidylcholine in alcoholic liver disease in US veterans found no effect on fibrosis progression, which is the finding the marketing does not mention.
