Norfloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used mainly for urinary and prostate infection; regulators in the United States and Europe have since restricted the whole class because of disabling tendon, nerve and aortic adverse effects.

Mechanism
It traps bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV on the DNA they are cutting, so replication forks collide with the stalled complexes and the chromosome fragments. The human topoisomerase II counterpart is affected far more weakly, but not zero, which is part of why the class has the toxicity profile it does.

Anyone handed it for a simple urinary infection is being given the wrong drug, and older people and anyone already on a corticosteroid are the ones the tendon injury actually happens to.
