Mechanism
Inosine feeds the purine salvage pathway and can raise erythrocyte 2,3-diphosphoglycerate, which was the original rationale for expecting better oxygen delivery to working muscle. It is also metabolised to urate, and that urate raising effect is the basis of the separate and better designed work on inosine in Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.
