Bromazepam is a classic prescription benzodiazepine used mainly for anxiety. Like other benzodiazepines it calms the brain by enhancing the effect of GABA, the main inhibitory (calming) neurotransmitter, producing anxiety relief, sedation and muscle relaxation. It carries the usual benzodiazepine hazards: dependence with regular use, dangerous synergy with other depressants, and a rough withdrawal.

Mechanism
Bromazepam is a positive modulator of the -A receptor; it binds at the benzodiazepine site and increases how often the receptor's chloride channel opens in response to GABA, deepening inhibitory signaling throughout the brain. That widespread dampening of neural activity is what produces its anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), sedative, muscle-relaxant and anticonvulsant effects.

The most serious danger is combining bromazepam with other central-nervous-system depressants, especially opioids and alcohol; together they can suppress breathing and cause fatal overdose. Regular use leads to tolerance and physical dependence, and stopping abruptly can trigger a withdrawal that includes rebound anxiety, insomnia and, in severe cases, seizures, so discontinuation is usually tapered.
