Paraxanthine is the point of this one, and the argument for it is metabolic rather than marketing. It is not an alternative to caffeine in the abstract; it is what caffeine mostly BECOMES. In humans, roughly 70 to 80 percent of a caffeine dose is demethylated by CYP1A2 into paraxanthine, so much of what a coffee actually does is already paraxanthine doing it.
What that changes is the rest of the split. The other metabolites, theobromine and theophylline, carry a good share of the parts people dislike: theophylline is the more cardiovascularly active one, and its effect on smooth muscle and heart rate is not the part anybody drinks coffee for. Taking paraxanthine directly is taking the metabolite you wanted without the two you did not.
It is also naturally occurring, which is the other half of the brief; it is a normal human metabolite and appears in the same plants, rather than being a synthetic analogue of one.
L-Theanine does here what it does beside caffeine, and it is the best-evidenced pairing in this whole roster: it raises alpha-band activity and blunts the sympathetic edge, and what goes is the jitter rather than the lift.
