Edaravone (MCI-186) is a small-molecule free-radical scavenger; it mops up reactive oxygen species such as peroxyl and hydroxyl radicals that damage cells under oxidative stress. Mechanism
Edaravone is a , low-molecular-weight antioxidant that donates electrons to quench free radicals, especially peroxyl and hydroxyl species, interrupting the chain reactions of lipid peroxidation that damage neuronal membranes. Because it partitions into both watery and fatty compartments it can scavenge radicals in the cytosol and within lipid membranes, protecting neurons, , and blood-vessel cells from oxidative injury. In ischemic and neurodegenerative settings this reduces oxidative damage to lipids, proteins, and DNA, which is thought to slow the cascade of cell death.
