2M2B (2-methyl-2-butanol) is a tertiary alcohol with sedative, alcohol-like effects; because it's a tertiary alcohol it isn't metabolized into a toxic aldehyde, so it's said to lack the hangover of ethanol. It's considerably more potent than drinking alcohol by volume. Being a solvent-grade chemical with a narrow margin, dosing errors and depressant stacking are the main dangers.

Mechanism
2M2B produces central nervous system depression much like ethanol and other alcohols, thought to act largely through enhancement of -A receptor function (increasing inhibitory tone) alongside general effects on neuronal membranes. As a tertiary alcohol it cannot be oxidized to an aldehyde or carboxylic acid, so unlike ethanol it isn't converted to acetaldehyde; this is the usual explanation for its reportedly milder hangover. It is several times more potent than ethanol by weight, so small measurement errors translate into large dose differences.
