Mechanism
In the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway, lanosterol is formed from squalene and then converted through many steps into cholesterol, so it is a natural intermediate in sterol metabolism. The intriguing observation is that lanosterol appears to act as a molecular chaperone-like agent that can reduce the aggregation of crystallin proteins; crystallins are the transparent structural proteins of the lens, and when they misfold and clump, the lens clouds into a cataract.
