Magnesium oxide is the cheapest, most concentrated magnesium salt on the shelf; it is roughly 60% elemental magnesium by weight (elemental magnesium is the actual usable magnesium delivered, separate from the weight of the whole salt), so a small pill carries a big number. The catch is that it is poorly absorbed (low bioavailability), so most of that magnesium never makes it into your bloodstream. What does not get absorbed sits in the gut and pulls water in osmotically, which is why magnesium oxide's most dependable real-world job is as a laxative for occasional constipation and as an antacid for heartburn, not as an efficient way to top up your body's magnesium. If your goal is actually raising magnesium levels or chasing the calm-nerves and sleep benefits people associate with magnesium, better-absorbed forms (glycinate, citrate, L-threonate) are the smarter pick.
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor, a class of medicine that strongly and lastingly reduces the production of stomach acid. It is the S-enantiomer of the older drug omeprazole, developed and marketed by AstraZeneca under the brand name Nexium. Taken by mouth or by injection, it is used to treat acid-related disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcers, and conditions of acid overproduction. It is available both by prescription and, at lower strengths, over the counter.
