Idebenone

Idebenone is a synthetic analog of coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone), a short-chain benzoquinone with antioxidant and mitochondrial properties. Originally developed by Takeda for Alzheimer's disease and other cognitive disorders, it is now used mainly as an approved treatment for Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy, a rare inherited cause of vision loss. It has also been studied in other mitochondrial and neuromuscular diseases and is used as an antioxidant ingredient in some skincare products.

SkQ1 is a mitochondria-targeted antioxidant, a synthetic compound built by attaching the plant antioxidant plastoquinone to a positively charged carrier that accumulates inside mitochondria. Developed by a Russian team led by Vladimir Skulachev, it is designed to neutralize reactive oxygen species at their main source and has been studied for aging and age-related conditions. Its best-known application is a dilute eye-drop formulation approved in Russia to treat dry eye syndrome.
