Slippery elm (Ulmus rubra) is a deciduous tree native to eastern and central North America whose inner bark has a long history of use as an herbal demulcent. When mixed with water the powdered inner bark forms a soothing mucilage that has traditionally been taken for sore throat, cough, and digestive complaints. It is sold as an over-the-counter demulcent in lozenges, powders, and teas, and is considered generally recognized as safe.
Zinc L-carnosine, also known by the generic name polaprezinc, is a chelate compound in which a zinc ion is bound to the dipeptide L-carnosine. Developed in Japan, it is used there and in some other countries as a prescription medicine for gastric ulcers and gastritis, and it is sold elsewhere as a dietary supplement for gut and mucosal health. It is valued as a mucosa-protective agent rather than an acid-suppressing drug.
